Beyond the Top 10: 2024’s 10 Biggest Horror Surprises You Need to See
Welcome to Ranking Horror where we do nothing but rank horror movies. Today we are going Beyond the Top 10: 2024’s 10 Biggest Horror Surprises You Need to See.
Table of Contents
Now, when I say surprising, I mean the horror films from 2024 that simply came out of nowhere. Titles that we really didn’t expect much from but that left us very pleasantly shocked. 2024 was such a great year for horror that I found myself surprised over and over again.
It was just great horror movie after great horror movie and not just the big hitters, too. There were a ton of low key indie classics and DIY films that blew us away. Something that is genuinely fantastic for us horror fans. So why not list those movies?
I should clarify that I want to avoid any crossover with my 2024’s Top 10 Horror Movies list, hence why this list will not feature any of those movies. Without further ado, let’s go Beyond the Top 10: 2024’s 10 Biggest Horror Surprises You Need to See.
| Rank | Movie Title (Year) | The Surprise Factor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Presence (2024) | Ghost POV |
| 2 | Lowlifes (2024) | Tubi Gold |
| 3 | I Saw The TV Glow (2024) | Nostalgia Trip |
| 4 | The Damned (2024) | Folk Horror Choice |
| 5 | Late Night With The Devil (2024) | Talk Show Terror |
10. Daddy’s Head (2024) – Stepfather Issues
- Director: Benjamin Barfoot
- Cast: Julia Brown, Rupert Turnbull
- Runtime: 96 minutes
- IMDb: 5.8/10
Why it Ranked: Sure, it’s nothing ground breaking. But we really weren’t expecting a lot from Daddy’s Head (ahem) and were left pleasantly surprised by what is a pretty intriguing and fairly creepy little horror movie. Benjamin Barfoot takes the helm in this British Shudder Original that we quite enjoyed in 2024. Decent acting and some tense moments make this an enjoyable watch.
Synopsis: A young boy who recently lost his father suddenly begins to see a creature with a face resembling that of his departed parent. His stepmother must determine if the entity is there to comfort him or if its intentions are much more sinister.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder, AMC+, and Philo.
9. V/H/S/Beyond (2024) – Sci-Fi Shockers
- Director: Jay Cheel, Jordan Downey, et al.
- Cast: Mitch Horowitz, Alanah Pearce
- Runtime: 114 minutes
- IMDb: 6.0/10
Why it Ranked: Let’s be honest, the V/H/S anthology horror movies can be a mixed bag, at best. When it was announced that 2024’s iteration would follow a science fiction theme, we weren’t exactly excited by the prospect. With that being said, the movie actually turned out to be pretty damn good. All of the segments were very watchable and a few stood out for being pretty interesting. Stowaway, in particular, is an idea I would love to see more of in the future.

Synopsis: Six bloodcurdling tapes explore the horrors of science fiction, featuring alien abductions, skydiving nightmares, and paparazzi hunting monstrous celebrities. Each segment pushes the boundaries of the found footage genre into the extraterrestrial.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder, AMC+, and Philo.
8. Double Blind (2024) – Awake or Dead
- Director: Ian Hunt-Duffy
- Cast: Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh
- Runtime: 90 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: Double Blind feels pretty fresh in a world of formulaic horror. Taking the concept of sleeplessness and turning it into something torturous and terrifying. Great acting and some decent atmosphere make this movie better than the sum of its parts. It is one of those types of horror movies that is perfect for filling a gap in your schedule with something fun that doesn’t demand too much thought. The portrayals of sleeplessness in this horror-thriller are pretty interesting, there is a decent amount of tension and the plot is simple but effective.
Synopsis: A group of medical test subjects are given an experimental drug as part of a paid study. Things go completely wrong when the medication results in the subjects dying if they fall asleep, leading to a terrifying reality where the group must stay awake at all costs.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video and fuboTV. Also available free with ads on The Roku Channel.
7. Caddo Lake (2024) – Bayou Mystery
- Director: Celine Held, Logan George
- Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Eliza Scanlen
- Runtime: 99 minutes
- IMDb: 6.9/10
Why it Ranked: Can I include this one? Is this too much of a thriller to put on this list? Bah, I don’t care! There’s so much crossover between the two genres and Caddo Lake‘s plot is dark enough to appeal to horror fans so let’s put it in anyway. I am trying to summarise the plot without giving too much away as that is the best way to enjoy Caddo Lake. Go in knowing nothing and immerse yourself as you go along. Awesome stuff and a movie I was not expecting at all in 2024. Give it a go for something that legitimately might surprise you.

Synopsis: After an 8-year-old girl goes missing in Caddo Lake, a mystery is uncovered that links together a number of past deaths and disappearances. As the search intensifies, a family’s broken history comes to the surface, revealing a timeline that is far from linear.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.
6. Your Monster (2024) – Closet Romance
- Director: Caroline Lindy
- Cast: Melissa Barrera, Tommy Dewey
- Runtime: 98 minutes
- IMDb: 6.4/10
Why it Ranked: Caroline Lindy directs this comedy horror romance in which a soft spoken actress falls in love with a monster that she finds living in her closet. Perhaps not as funny as you might expect, the great chemistry between the leads and the strangeness of the concept make this a surprise hit. Melissa Barrera is a bit of a scream queen, as of late, and is at her best here. It is really hard to deny just how charming Your Monster is. A great option for date night or just those looking for a horror with a difference.
Synopsis: After a devastating breakup and a cancer diagnosis, a soft-spoken actress retreats to her childhood home. There, she encounters a charming but terrifying monster living in her closet who helps her find her voice and unleash her inner rage.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Max. Also available to stream for free on Kanopy.
5. Late Night With The Devil (2024) – On-Air Possession
- Director: Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes
- Cast: David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon
- Runtime: 93 minutes
- IMDb: 7.0/10
Why it Ranked: Man, what a brilliant movie and one of the highlights in what turned out to be a marquee year for streaming service Shudder. This movie is a mix of found footage and documentary (mockumentary) that works far better than it has any right to. Playing out as a retelling of what went wrong on the fateful Halloween broadcast. Late Night With The Devil comprises clips of the show itself, interviews with people, and backstage footage. Awesome stuff and feels completely fresh against a backdrop of altogether too familiar horror.

Synopsis: A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. Talk show host Jack Delroy attempts to boost his flagging ratings with a Halloween special featuring a live séance, but he gets far more than he bargained for.
Where to Watch: Streaming on AMC+.
4. The Damned (2024) – Cold Choices
- Director: Thordur Palsson
- Cast: Odessa Young, Joe Cole
- Runtime: 89 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: The Damned is a legitimately fascinating folk horror from Iceland. The Damned doesn’t stick the landing and I think that will undermine just how much it does right. Well acted, legitimately unsettling and beautifully filmed. This movie came in the dying days of 2024 and marked a fantastic way to end the year. A great concept and well made, just unfortunately messy towards the last quarter. Still, it captures a bleak atmosphere that few other movies managed this year.
Synopsis: A widow in a 19th-century Icelandic village is forced to make an impossible choice when a ship sinks off the coast during a harsh winter. She must decide between rescuing the crew or focusing on the survival of her own starving community, a decision that comes with haunting consequences.
Where to Watch: Currently available to rent or buy on services like Google Play, Apple TV, and Prime Video.
3. I Saw The TV Glow (2024) – Static Dreams
- Director: Jane Schoenbrun
- Cast: Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine
- Runtime: 100 minutes
- IMDb: 5.9/10
Why it Ranked: I Saw The TV Glow was a massive surprise horror hit from Jane Schoenbrun. The only problem is that it is fairly lacking in the horror. A touching plot and some extremely poignant moments make this movie incredibly memorable. If you are looking for scares, other than those of the existential kind, you may find yourself disappointed. Still, there wasn’t anything quite like I Saw The TV Glow in 2024 and its hard to deny its ultimate importance as both a movie and piece of art.

Synopsis: Two teenagers bond over their shared love of a cheesy, supernatural kid’s detective show. As they become enamoured with it, the boundary between the show and their reality begins to blur, making them question their own identities and the world they live in.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.
2. Lowlifes (2024) – Tubi Treasure
- Director: Tesh Guttikonda
- Cast: Amanda Fix, Matthew MacCaull
- Runtime: 90 minutes
- IMDb: 6.3/10
Why it Ranked: What a brilliant movie and this one, most definitely, came out of nowhere. Who would have thought we would be giving so much credit to a Tubi original, after all? That’s truly surprising. Lowlifes goes in a direction you might not expect. Pulling the rug from underneath you and being all the more brilliant for doing it. Witty, entertaining, consistently engaging and genuinely brutal. This is one of the best horror surprises of last year. Sure, you may see what is coming but I bet you will be entertained on the way. Awesome stuff.
Synopsis: A road-tripping family is forced to spend the night with some rather unusual locals in a small rural town. What starts as a typical backwoods survival story quickly twists into something much more unexpected and bloody.
Where to Watch: Streaming free with ads on Tubi.
1. Presence (2024) – A New Perspective
- Director: Steven Soderbergh
- Cast: Lucy Liu, Julia Fox
- Runtime: 85 minutes
- IMDb: 6.1/10
Why it Ranked: This one might be cheating a bit but, technically, this is a 2024 movie thank to its festival run. Maybe it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that Presence was pretty damn good. What with Steven Soderbergh directing and a competent cast. But the way the movie approaches the tried and tested formula of haunted house horror is both refreshing and effective. Soderbergh projects the events here through the eyes of the presence, placing the viewer as a fly on the wall to what is taking place. Interesting stuff and a perfect option for fans of paranormal horror. Presence feels like the most refreshing take on the subject in quite a long time. A big surprise in 2024.

Synopsis: A family moves into a suburban house, unaware that they are not alone. A spectral entity observes their every move, and the story unfolds entirely from the perspective of this silent, watching presence.
Where to Watch: Currently available to rent or buy on digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.
