10 Horror Movies That Disappointed Us From The First Half of 2025
Welcome to Ranking Horror. Today we are taking a look at 10 Horror Movies That Disappointed Us From The First Half of 2025.
Table of Contents
2025 started off pretty slowly in the horror department. It is starting to really pick up now with some absolutely brilliant releases, but the early parts of the year were marked by big-name disappointments. Well-established directors, big-time stars, and underwhelming movies were the name of the game.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 Horror Movies That Disappointed Us From The First Half of 2025. Remember, this is only my opinion. If a movie appears on this list that you love, that’s cool. I am not trying to be controversial, just giving my honest verdict.
| Rank | Movie Title (Year) | The Disappointment Factor |
|---|---|---|

| 2 | The Parenting (2025) | Cringe-worthy Humour & Overacting |
| 3 | Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) | A Flat, Generic Slasher Slump |
| 4 | Opus (2025) | Style-over-Substance Yawn-fest |
| 5 | Wolf Man (2025) | A Reboot that Lacks Bite & Logic |
10. M3gan 2.0 (2025) – More Camp, Less Scares
- Director: Gerard Johnstone
- Cast: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw
- Runtime: 105 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.9/10
Why it Ranked: I’m really sad that I have to include this on our list of the 10 most disappointing horror movies of 2025 so far. M3gan is back, but this time it’s not really a horror; the creators have leaned far too into the camp silliness of the original. If you are looking for more from the ass-kicking killer doll, you’ll be fine, but if you want horror, you will be disappointed. It turns up the farce dial to 11 and feels far more like a self-aware action movie than its predecessor.
Synopsis: M3gan is brought back to life to take down a rival, highly advanced military-grade robot. The resulting clash turns into an over-the-top battle of artificial intelligences that leaves little room for the tension or dread found in the first film.
Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy)
9. Drop (2025) – A Generic Digital Thriller
- Director: Christopher Landon
- Cast: Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar
- Runtime: 92 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.4/10
Why it Ranked: With Christopher Landon attached to direct, I wanted Drop to be great, but it was simply average. It isn’t offensively bad; it’s just extremely generic. Repetitive sequences, limited thrills, and stop-start pacing let the premise down. It’s watchable for thriller fans, but it fails to capture any of the inventive spark found in Landon’s previous work.

Synopsis: A widow on a first date in a high-end restaurant begins receiving threatening AirDrop messages on her phone. She is forced into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with an anonymous harasser who claims to have her family held hostage.
Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon (Rent/Buy)
8. Death of a Unicorn (2025) – Far from Magical
- Director: Alex Scharfman
- Cast: Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter
- Runtime: 108 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.8/10
Why it Ranked: This movie is undone by its devoted focus on Jenna Ortega’s unlikable teen character and a plot that fails to deliver. It has some fun moments, mostly thanks to Paul Rudd and Will Poulter, but overall it’s just “mid”. If you were expecting a dark, magical fantasy with bite, you’ll likely feel this unicorn hit the road a bit too hard.
Synopsis: A father and daughter heading to a corporate retreat accidentally hit a unicorn with their car. When they bring the mythical creature back to the CEO’s compound, they realize the company intends to harvest the beast for its life-extending properties, leading to a weird and underwhelming moral conflict.
Where to Watch: A24+, Amazon (Rent/Buy)
7. It Feeds (2025) – Formulaic Fright-less Feast
- Director: Chad Archibald
- Cast: Ashley Greene, Shawn Ashmore
- Runtime: 94 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.1/10
Why it Ranked: Chad Archibald has a knack for putting out mediocre horror, and this is no exception. Despite a committed performance from Ashley Greene, it’s difficult to see this as anything other than formulaic. The ending scenes are absolutely insane in a way that breaks immersion, and the overabundance of cheap jump scares makes the whole thing feel dull.

Synopsis: A clairvoyant woman and her daughter attempt to rescue a young girl who claims she is being haunted by a malevolent demon. As they dig deeper, they realise the entity “feeds” on the trauma of those it stalks, leading to a supernatural showdown that lacks any real tension.
Where to Watch: Tubi, Vudu
6. Ash (2025) – All Smoke, No Fire
- Director: Flying Lotus
- Cast: Eiza González, Aaron Paul
- Runtime: 102 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.5/10
Why it Ranked: Visually, Ash is pretty fantastic, and fans of trippy electronic soundtracks will appreciate Flying Lotus’ compositions. However, the film falls foul of ripping off just about every other sci-fi horror ever made. There aren’t many original ideas, the script is lacking, and the story is both unsatisfying and ultimately pretty dull. It left me feeling a bit short-changed.
Synopsis: A woman wakes up on a space station on a distant planet to find her entire crew has been brutally murdered. As she investigates the cause with the help of a mysterious rescuer, she begins to suspect that the threat might be closer, and more biological, than she initially thought.
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon (Rent/Buy)
5. Wolf Man (2025) – Reboot without the Bite
- Director: Leigh Whannell
- Cast: Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner
- Runtime: 104 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 6.0/10
Why it Ranked: Leigh Whannell couldn’t work the same magic here that he did on The Invisible Man. Wolf Man trades in potential horror excitement for a misplaced message about tackling inner demons. The thrills feel truncated and thin on the ground, leaving the final product feeling condensed and disappointing given the high expectations we had for a Whannell reboot.

Synopsis: A man moves his family back to his remote childhood home, only to be attacked by a mysterious creature. As the night progresses, he begins to undergo a terrifying transformation that threatens the very people he is trying to protect.
Where to Watch: Theatrical Release / Peacock
4. Opus (2025) – Style over Substance
- Director: Mark Anthony Green
- Cast: John Malkovich, Ayo Edebiri
- Runtime: 98 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.2/10
Why it Ranked: This movie thinks it can coast by on being visually unique without a compelling story. It’s poorly paced, not scary, and disappointingly bland. Ayo Edebiri plays a milquetoast protagonist in a horror movie that fails to be interesting despite Malkovich’s best efforts. If you combined Midsommar with a synth-pop aesthetic but took away the talent, you’d have Opus.
Synopsis: An aspiring writer is invited to the secluded compound of a world-famous pop star. She quickly realises that the “artistic process” at the compound involves cult-like devotion and a terrifying, supernatural secret behind the star’s legendary fame.
Where to Watch: A24+, Amazon (Rent/Buy)
3. Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) – A Stale Sequel
- Director: Matt Palmer
- Cast: India Fowler, Suzanna Son
- Runtime: 105 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 5.3/10
Why it Ranked: The Fear Street series has been surprisingly competent until this point which makes this effort all the more disappointing. Prom Queen feels incredibly flat and generic – a huge let-down for anyone who enjoyed the previous nostalgia-fueled slashers. It lacks the energy of its predecessors and feels like a low-effort addition to a franchise that previously seemed to care about its “R.L. Stine” roots.

Synopsis: It’s prom season at Shadyside High, and the competition for Prom Queen is deadly. When the popular candidates begin to disappear in gruesome ways, a social outcast finds herself at the centre of a slasher mystery that reveals the town’s curse hasn’t quite finished with the youth of Shadyside.
Where to Watch: Netflix
2. The Parenting (2025) – Cringe-worthy Comedy
- Director: Craig Johnson
- Cast: Brian Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Edie Falco
- Runtime: 96 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 4.8/10
Why it Ranked: This movie made me wince more than it made me laugh. It feels like an upper-class version of Scary Movie full of overacting and remedial SNL-style humour. Lisa Kudrow and the rest of the cast chew every bit of scenery, and despite a willing Brian Cox, the script is just awful. It’s one of the few movies on this list that I genuinely hated sitting through.
Synopsis: A young couple rents a countryside holiday home for a weekend to introduce their parents to each other. The awkward family bonding is interrupted when they discover the house is haunted by a 400-year-old poltergeist that thrives on their domestic drama.
Where to Watch: Max
1. Borderline (2025) – An Insulting Anti-Climax
- Director: Jimmy Warden
- Cast: Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson
- Runtime: 94 minutes
- IMDb Rating: 4.4/10
Why it Ranked: This is the most disappointing horror movie of the year so far and it’s made all the worse because I was looking forward to it. Borderline presents itself as stylish and clever but is simply dull and unfunny. Samara Weaving seems completely disinterested here, and Ray Nicholson overacts mercilessly in a way that just doesn’t work. It’s an unbearable movie made worse by the fact that the opening moments actually leave you thinking you might be in for a good time.

Synopsis: A world-famous pop star’s night of relaxation is shattered when an obsessed stalker breaks into her home. What follows is a supposed “black comedy” battle of wits that results in zero laughs and a series of boring, flat sequences that lead to a predictable ending.
Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Apple TV (Rent/Buy)
