Sorry, Not Sorry: 2024’s 10 Most Overrated Horror Movies

Welcome to Ranking Horror. Today we are bringing you Sorry, Not Sorry: 2024’s 10 Most Overrated Horror Movies.

This horror movie list is focusing on those horror films from 2024 that I believe were overrated in one way or another. When I say overrated, it can mean either critically or by the general public. Horror movies that horror movie reviewers loved or that the horror community wouldn’t shut up about.

We are not saying these 2024 horror movies are bad, we are simply saying that the praise didn’t match the actual quality of the film, making them some of the year’s most disappointing horror for us. This one might prove to be controversial. I mean, when you are talking about movies that you think are overrated, you are always risking ruffling a few feathers, right?

Some people are going to love the horror movies on this list and will disagree with me massively. Still, keep in mind, these are just my unpopular horror opinions and not fact, so don’t sweat it too much if a movie you love appears on the list. Let’s take a look at Sorry, Not Sorry: 2024’s 10 Most Overrated Horror Movies.

RankMovie Title (Year)The Hype Factor

Hype vs. Reality: A summary of the top 5 most overrated horror movies of 2024.

10. Trap (2024) – Dad Rock Trap

  • Director: M. Night Shyamalan
  • Cast: Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue
  • Runtime: 105 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.8/10

Why it Ranked: Trap wasn’t exactly glowingly received but I have seen enough people praise it to include it on this list. Trap is M. Night Shyamalan up to his old tricks in this 2024 horror release. Lighter on the twists than most of his movies. Trap also acts as an obnoxious vehicle for his daughter Saleka Shyamalan who takes centre stage as pop star Lady Raven. This Shyamalan movie feels low effort even by his standards. Only, this time, his usually tight direction is also incredibly lacklustre. Luckily, Josh Hartnett makes the movie somewhat watchable with his brilliant performance. Just don’t expect too much.

Synopsis: A father and his teen daughter attend a pop concert, only to realise they’ve entered the centre of a dark and sinister event. The entire venue is a trap set by the police to catch a notorious serial killer known as “The Butcher,” who happens to be the father himself.

9. Sting (2024) – Generic Creature Feature

  • Director: Kiah Roache-Turner
  • Cast: Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr
  • Runtime: 91 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.7/10

Why it Ranked: Can you believe this movie has a 70% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes? I don’t hate this spider themed horror movie, but man is it overrated? Sting is an extremely generic creature feature that is massively tonally confused. It can’t decide whether it wants to be a family friendly cheese fest full of heart warming sentiment and familial drama. Or whether it wants to be an adult-centric horror full of gore and tragedy. It suffers for its lack of direction and, aside from that, is just about as generic as a movie like this can possibly be.

Sting tries to weave a web of horror but gets tangled in its own tonal confusion.

Synopsis: A rebellious 12-year-old girl discovers a strange little spider and decides to keep it as a secret pet. Her fascination turns to terror as the creature grows at an alarming rate and develops an insatiable appetite for flesh and blood.

8. Nightbitch (2024) – Canine Comedy Fail

  • Director: Marielle Heller
  • Cast: Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.8/10

Why it Ranked: Okay, this is another one that isn’t exactly glowingly reviewed. But Nightbitch is one of those movies that people wouldn’t shut up about for a little while in late 2024. The problem is, it gets old very fast. Amy Adams is sensational but Nightbitch goes nowhere fast. It has borrowed all of its ideas from better body horror movies. Has shoehorned in horror elements to push the movie to a more forgiving audience. And its message feels diluted by an absolutely laughably bad script. Some of the monologues here will make your toes curl for how awkward the writing is.

Synopsis: An artist pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but her domestic life takes a surreal turn. As the isolation of motherhood sets in, she begins to believe she is transforming into a dog, finding solace in her new, feral instincts.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.

7. It’s What’s Inside (2024) – Identity Crisis

  • Director: Greg Jardin
  • Cast: Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini
  • Runtime: 103 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.6/10

Why it Ranked: A lot of critics raved about this Netflix horror movie, It’s What’s Inside, ignoring some of the very obvious problems that it has. It’s What’s Inside sort of falls into that Bodies, Bodies, Bodies style of horror-comedy. With a keen focus on comedy and the interactions between the friends taking centre stage. The problem is, it simply isn’t that interesting. It starts off strong but the concept dries up quickly, begging more questions than there are answers for. The plot holes are many, the humour gets old eventually, and the movie becomes quite boring. Not terrible but nowhere near as good as many like to make out.

A screenshot from horror comedy It's What's Inside (2024)
A clever concept that runs out of steam long before the credits roll.

Synopsis: A pre-wedding party descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious suitcase. He proposes a body-swapping game that exposes hidden secrets, desires, and grudges among the group.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

6. Apartment 7A (2024) – Rosemary’s Boredom

  • Director: Natalie Erika James
  • Cast: Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest
  • Runtime: 104 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.6/10

Why it Ranked: This is a horror prequel that, I think, the world could have done without. This is, basically, a Rosemary’s Baby redux. Only this supernatural horror film has less scares, less atmosphere, worse acting, annoying dance scenes that feel wildly out of place, and a boringly long runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes. Natalie Erika James attempts to “play the hits” with Apartment 7A but the results are less than stellar. Some critics love it, though, which is why it appears on this list of Overrated Horror Movies.

Synopsis: A struggling young dancer suffers a devastating injury and finds herself drawn into dark forces by a peculiar, older couple who promise her a shot at fame. Set in 1965 New York City, the story serves as a prequel to the classic horror film Rosemary’s Baby.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Paramount+.

  • Director: Zoë Kravitz
  • Cast: Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum
  • Runtime: 102 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.6/10

Why it Ranked: A tech billionaire invites a waitress along to spend a vacation with him and his friends on a lavish island. Too good to be true? It soon starts to seem that way as things there just don’t seem to add up in Zoë Kravitz’ psychological horror-thriller. I suppose, given the names attached and the big budget, this movie had all the potential in the world to be good. It’s still surprising just how much fanfare it got and a lot of people enjoyed it. Me? Well, my fiancée and I turned this one off after 40 minutes so I can’t comment. Sorry, Blink Twice. I was surprised by just how boring and formulaic this island mystery was.

A screenshot from horror movie Blink Twice (2024)
Despite the star power, Blink Twice is a vacation you’ll want to leave early.

Synopsis: When a tech billionaire meets a cocktail waitress at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But as strange things start to happen, she begins to question her reality.

Where to Watch: Streaming on MGM+ and Prime Video.

4. Cuckoo (2024) – Style Over Substance

  • Director: Tilman Singer
  • Cast: Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens
  • Runtime: 102 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.9/10

Why it Ranked: I didn’t vibe with this movie in quite the same way as a lot of people did but man was it hyped to all hell. I remember eagerly waiting for a chance to watch it only to be rather disappointed by the result. Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens are fantastic here and help elevate the weird horror film itself. The movie just feels so tonally confused, though, and there are a lot of ideas in play that don’t always work. I really didn’t enjoy some of the direction choices, as well. Maybe this is one of those movies that takes a few watches to get but I just didn’t see what the big fuss was about.

Synopsis: A 17-year-old girl is forced to move with her family to a resort where things are not what they seem. As she uncovers the resort’s shocking secrets, she finds herself in a fight for survival against a mysterious woman who shrieks like a bird.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.

3. Longlegs (2024) – Marketing Magic

  • Director: Oz Perkins
  • Cast: Maika Monroe, Nicolas Cage
  • Runtime: 101 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.7/10

Why it Ranked: This is the first movie that is going to find a place on both this list and our 2024’s Top 10 Horror Movies list. Yes, a horror movie can be both great and massively overrated. The problem with Oz Perkins’ Longlegs is that it is a very good horror movie that critics have made out to be a masterpiece. The hyperbole surrounding this movie was incredible. Declared the “scariest horror ever” and cited as the “best horror in years“. The ridiculous narrative that followed Longlegs created a circus out of the film. Leading to viewers being thoroughly underwhelmed when realising that it is simply a modern version of The Silence of the Lambs that does a lot right but can never live up to the hype.

A screenshot from horror movie Longlegs (2024)
Great atmosphere, amazing marketing, but arguably not the masterpiece it was sold as.

Synopsis: In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree. As she gets closer to the truth, she discovers a personal connection to the killer that threatens to unravel her sanity.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.

2. Terrifier 3 (2024) – Edgelord Christmas

  • Director: Damien Leone
  • Cast: David Howard Thornton, Lauren LaVera
  • Runtime: 125 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.5/10

Why it Ranked: Come on, let’s be honest with ourselves for just a second. Terrifier 3 is a little bit of a cringefest. The return of Art The Clown, back on the hunt for Sienna and determined to massacre everybody in his path, is desperate to make you wince. Like an edgy 13 year old boy, it will do anything to step as far over the line of decency as possible. Nothing is off limits here as Terrifier 3 tries its very best to be shocking and controversial. If we are honest, what it actually is, is an overly long, try hard, formulaic gory slasher with few ideas and even less taste. This extreme horror movie goes on for over two hours and doesn’t manage to do anything new in that whole time. Not a terrible movie but absolutely overrated.

Synopsis: Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve. Sienna and her brother are struggling to rebuild their shattered lives, but Art’s return threatens to destroy everything they have left.

1. MaXXXine (2024) – Ti West’s Ego Trip

  • Director: Ti West
  • Cast: Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki
  • Runtime: 104 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.4/10

Why it Ranked: Full disclosure while I am talking about Ti West’s third entry into the Maxine Minx series MaXXXine. I really didn’t enjoy X all that much. Despite that, I thought Pearl was one of the best horror movies of 2022. For me, this movie just didn’t do all that much to deserve special mention. Technically it is fine, but does it deserve the effusive praise? I really don’t think so. It’s a dull, style over substance, exploitation style thriller with a fairly boring plot and little to write home about. On top of that, there is almost nothing here to qualify it as a horror movie. The hype for this was ludicrous and the result was lacklustre, landing MaXXXine at number 1 on our list.

A screenshot from horror movie MaXXXine (2024)
All style, zero substance: MaXXXine fails to stick the landing.

Synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Los Angeles, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.
