10. Nightbitch (2024) – Motherhood Unleashed

  • Director: Marielle Heller
  • Cast: Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Amy Adams is on fire in this horror comedy about a woman struggling to adapt to parenthood and finding comfort by releasing her more animal side. Nightbitch starts strong but becomes pretty repetitive after awhile. The horror elements feel very tacked on but this movie is sure to appeal to some and is hilarious in parts. If the last half wasn’t so predictable and dull, this would be a very easy movie to recommend.

Synopsis: An artist pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but her domestic life takes a surreal turn. As the isolation of motherhood sets in, she begins to believe she is transforming into a dog, finding solace in her new, feral instincts.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.

9. It’s What’s Inside (2024) – Body Swap Chaos

  • Director: Greg Jardin
  • Cast: Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini
  • Runtime: 103 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.7/10

Why it Ranked: Another example of a movie that starts great but doesn’t stick the landing. So much of this movie is so great that it is easy to forgive the somewhat silly direction it wanders off in. Hilarious in parts and based around a really interesting, Freaky Friday-esque, concept. This is absolutely worth checking out.

A clever concept that mixes social satire with sci-fi body swapping.

Synopsis: A group of friends hook up for a bachelor party, only to find themselves suffering an extreme existential crisis after playing a game with an estranged friend who has brought a mysterious suitcase.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

8. Thanksgiving (2023) – Leftovers and Limbs

  • Director: Eli Roth
  • Cast: Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae
  • Runtime: 106 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Eli Roth reminds everyone that he is quite good at making slasher movies in 2023’s brilliant Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving does a hell of a lot right. It’s a lot of fun, there are some great kills and it is, often, very funny. It falls into some of the familiar slasher tropes but it is such a good time that it is easy to forgive its shortcomings.

Synopsis: After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorises Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday. One by one, the residents are picked off in gruesome ways.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

7. The Monkey (2025) – Toy Terror

  • Director: Osgood Perkins
  • Cast: Theo James, Tatiana Maslany
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: N/A

Why it Ranked: Directed by LonglegsOz Perkins. You don’t often associate Stephen King adaptations with serious comedy but The Monkey is a very different kind of adaptation. Absolutely wild from start to finish. The comedy plays centre stage here. Ridiculous deaths, tons of gore, and plenty of moments of hilarity. This movie may divide people who expect a serious horror film but it is still a huge amount of fun.

Stephen King’s classic story gets a darkly comedic update.

Synopsis: Twin brothers find a vintage cymbal-banging monkey toy in their father’s attic. However, they soon realise the toy is cursed, and every time the monkey bangs its cymbals, someone close to them meets a gruesome death.

6. Heart Eyes (2025) – Date Night Death

  • Director: Josh Ruben
  • Cast: Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding
  • Runtime: 97 minutes
  • IMDb: N/A

Why it Ranked: Should a romantic comedy slasher movie work? Probably not but Heart Eyes absolutely does. Brand new for Valentine’s day in 2025. This movie manages to blend comedy, romance and horror thrills in the most perfect way. Legitimately hilarious, in parts, well acted, and, honestly, rather charming. Heart Eyes does the slasher thing so well that even non-rom-com fans should find something to enjoy. Hell, if you enjoy romantic comedies and slashers, you will struggle to find a better movie.

Synopsis: A pair of co-workers are mistaken for a couple by the notorious “Heart Eyes Killer,” who targets lovers on Valentine’s Day. Forced together, they must survive the night and the killer’s deadly obsession with romance.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.

5. Abigail (2024) – Pint-Sized Predator

  • Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
  • Cast: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens
  • Runtime: 109 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.6/10

Why it Ranked: Abigail is an absolute riot of a horror movie. Abigail turns the vampire genre on its head, once again. With a strong commitment to laughs and some brilliant action scenes. This movie does for vampire flicks what M3gan did for killer AI robots. Tons of fun and often hilarious. This is a great option for some light horror thrills.

Don’t let the tutu fool you; Abigail is not to be trifled with.

4. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) – Gen Z Slasher

  • Director: Halina Reijn
  • Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova
  • Runtime: 94 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.2/10

Why it Ranked: Is this a controversial entry in our top 5? This movie really divides people. The deliberately satirical take on Gen Z culture seems to go over some people’s heads. Leaving them baffled by the obnoxious cast and horrible dialogue. When you realise that that is the entire point of the film. You are supposed to hate these people. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies becomes a clever, laugh a minute, whodunit with an absolute ton to love.

Synopsis: A group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion. But when a party game goes wrong and a dead body is found, backstabbing and fake friends turn the night into a bloody nightmare.

3. Companion (2025) – Love Hurts

  • Director: Drew Hancock
  • Cast: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: N/A

Why it Ranked: Without giving too much away. Companion is a movie that subverts expectation and presents us with one of the best thriller/horror movies of its type in years. Sophie Thatcher is absolutely phenomenal in this thoroughly enjoyable film that is far funnier than you might expect. Consistently committed to laughs; the mystery at the heart of Companion keeps you engaged throughout and the payoff is entirely enjoyable. Awesome stuff.

A twisted romance that keeps you guessing until the very end.

2. The Coffee Table (2022) – Furniture from Hell

  • Director: Caye Casas
  • Cast: David Pareja, Estefanía de los Santos
  • Runtime: 91 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.0/10

Why it Ranked: This movie is dark in a very specific kind of way. When you think of Dark Comedy, The Coffee Table should probably be near the top of the list. Addressing some seriously taboo subjects in a way that almost makes you feel guilty for laughing. The clever way this movie places you as a fly on the wall to an ever worsening situation feels extremely fresh. The events play out over the space of one afternoon and the consistently increasing tension make for one hell of an uncomfortable ride.

Synopsis: A struggling couple, Jesus and Maria, finally become parents. Against Maria’s wishes, Jesus buys a hideous coffee table for their apartment. A horrific accident involving the table turns their lives upside down, leading to an afternoon of unbearable tension.

Where to Watch: Streaming on AMC+.

1. The Substance (2024) – Beautifully Grotesque

  • Director: Coralie Fargeat
  • Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley
  • Runtime: 141 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.5/10

Why it Ranked: Probably an obvious choice here but what other movie is deserving of the top spot in a list of comedy horror movies from the last few years? Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance has been nominated for a number of Oscars and boy does it deserve the recognition? Demi Moore is brilliant, the movie is absolutely hilarious, and the 2 hour plus runtime absolutely flies as you are just having so much fun. The body horror elements are brilliant and the story feels fresh. Not just a great comedy horror but one of the best horror movies, as a whole, in years.

A screenshot from body horror comedy The Substance (2024)
A scathing, hilarious, and gruesome look at beauty standards.
