The Flipside: 2024’s 10 Most Underrated Horror Movies
Welcome to Ranking Horror. Today we are ranking 10 of 2024’s Most Underrated Horror Movies. This list acts as a bit of a flipside to our 10 Most Overrated Horror Movies from 2024.
Table of Contents
Now, when I say underrated horror movies, I don’t mean films that were exceptional pieces of cinema that somehow slipped completely under the radar. The horror genre isn’t afforded the opportunity for that to happen thanks to how thin on the ground great horror films are. What I mean is genuinely underrated horror gems that are worth a watch despite a lukewarm or mediocre reception. Most of these movies here are pretty flawed but still very watchable.
Some of these horror films are fantastic if you can just forgive some of the issues. At worst, you will waste an hour or so of your time. At best, you may find a few hidden horror gems that you missed. Without further ado, let’s take a look at The Flipside: 2024’s 10 Most Underrated Horror Movies.
| Rank | Movie Title (Year) | The Underrated Factor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | In a Violent Nature (2024) | Ambient Slasher Deconstruction |
| 2 | Handling The Undead (2024) | Grief Walking |
| 3 | The Damned (2024) | Frozen Folk Horror |
| 4 | I Saw The TV Glow (2024) | Nostalgic Identity Crisis |
| 5 | Immaculate (2024) | Nunsploitation Resurrection |
10. Get Away (2024) – Nick Frost’s Holiday Hell
- Director: Steffen Haars
- Cast: Nick Frost, Aisling Bea
- Runtime: 86 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: A family head out on a remote getaway. Only to realise that their relaxing vacation is about to be in jeopardy as the island plays host to a vicious serial killer in this British comedy horror movie from director Steffen Haars. British actor Nick Frost, who you may remember from classic horror comedy Shaun of the Dead, appeared in two horror movies in 2024. One was the awful Black Cab and the other was this enjoyable horror-comedy title from December. Get Away takes a while to get going but once the twist comes in, it picks up and is a lot of fun.
Synopsis: A family’s vacation to a remote Swedish island takes a turn for the weird when they discover the locals are a bit too welcoming, and a serial killer might be on the loose. The father must protect his family from the threats lurking in the idyllic scenery.
Where to Watch: Available to rent or buy on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. Don’t Move (2024) – Paralytic Panic
- Director: Brian Netto, Adam Schindler
- Cast: Kelsey Asbille, Finn Wittrock
- Runtime: 92 minutes
- IMDb: 5.8/10
Why it Ranked: Don’t Move is probably more of a thriller than a horror but it is still worth checking out. I am sure you know what to expect here. Don’t Move is a traditional cat-and-mouse thriller with a slightly different gimmick. Iris is in a race against time to escape her captor before the paralytic agent kicks in. There are a decent number of thrills and an engaging enough plot. Making this a good option when you are just looking for some old fashioned thriller fun.

Synopsis: A seasoned killer injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent. She must escape, hide, and fight for her life before her body completely shuts down.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix.
8. Azrael (2024) – Silent Survival
- Director: E.L. Katz
- Cast: Samara Weaving, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett
- Runtime: 85 minutes
- IMDb: 5.6/10
Why it Ranked: Azrael takes place in a post-apocalyptic horror world where people don’t speak. Samara Weaving puts on a great, grunty, performance here as a character unable to speak in a world without words. It’s definitely not a perfect movie and it can be a little bit repetitive. But it is hard not to appreciate how different Azrael feels from most other 2024 horror movies. Not to mention the cat and mouse, hide and seek, shenanigans are quite satisfying.
Synopsis: In a world where no one speaks, a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman who has escaped their captivity. Recaptured and prepared for sacrifice to an ancient evil in the wilderness, she must fight for her freedom and survival.
Where to Watch: Available to rent or buy on Apple TV and Prime Video.
7. Double Blind (2024) – Sleep No More
- Director: Ian Hunt-Duffy
- Cast: Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh
- Runtime: 90 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: Double Blind is one of those types of horror movies that is perfect for filling a gap in your schedule with something fun that doesn’t demand too much thought. The portrayals of sleeplessness in this horror-thriller are pretty interesting, there is a decent amount of tension and some great acting. The plot is simple and there is something easy to like about a movie that knows what it wants to be and just wants to entertain.

Synopsis: A young woman and a group of volunteers take part in a drug trial for cash, but the side effects take a deadly turn. They discover that if they fall asleep, they die, forcing them to stay awake while trapped in an isolated facility.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video and fuboTV. Also available free with ads on The Roku Channel.
6. Grafted (2024) – Pretty Hurts
- Director: Sasha Rainbow
- Cast: Joyena Sun, Jess Hong
- Runtime: 97 minutes
- IMDb: 5.8/10
Why it Ranked: Grafted is a neat little body horror coming by way of streaming service Shudder. Again, this movie is a little flawed but it is still a lot of fun. Some decent body horror combines with a rather interesting Freaky Friday concept to create something that feels pretty fresh for the body horror subgenre. The first half isn’t great but if you stick with it the second half of the film has much more to offer.
Synopsis: A scholarship student obsessed with her father’s scientific work on skin grafting begins to use his research to achieve physical perfection. She goes to extreme, bloody lengths to steal the faces of her peers to gain popularity and acceptance.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder and AMC+.
5. Immaculate (2024) – Nunsploitation Resurrection
- Director: Michael Mohan
- Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Álvaro Morte
- Runtime: 89 minutes
- IMDb: 5.8/10
Why it Ranked: Michael Mohan’s Immaculate is a twin movie with The First Omen. Consequently, thanks to the name value of the aforementioned, it sort of flew under the radar a bit. Frequently being compared, unfavourably, to its horror movie doppelganger. The truth is, however, this script had been floating around for years and Sydney Sweeney’s excellent performance in this nunsploitation horror makes it a, dare I say it, more intense movie. Still very much worth a watch.

Synopsis: An American nun of devout faith embarks on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Her warm welcome quickly turns into a living nightmare when she discovers her new home harbours a dark secret and unspeakable horrors.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.
4. I Saw The TV Glow (2024) – Static Identity
- Director: Jane Schoenbrun
- Cast: Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine
- Runtime: 100 minutes
- IMDb: 5.9/10
Why it Ranked: I Saw The TV Glow has really found popularity via word of mouth. It can be argued that its subject matter has lead to some people simply refusing to acknowledge it. Those people are ignorantly missing out on what is a brilliant, often moving, story of coming to terms with who you really are and finding your own happiness in life. This is a story that anyone can relate to and, despite it barely being a psychological horror movie, it is a fantastic watch.
Synopsis: Two teenagers bond over their shared love of a scary television show. However, the boundary between the show and their reality begins to blur, leading to a surreal and unsettling journey of self-discovery and identity.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Max.
3. The Damned (2024) – Frozen Choices
- Director: Thordur Palsson
- Cast: Odessa Young, Joe Cole
- Runtime: 89 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: A ship sinks off of the coast of a 19th century village during a frightful winter. Forcing the residents there to make a troubling decision between helping the crew or looking after there own in this fantastic folk horror that comes by way of an international collaborative effort between Iceland, the UK, the USA, Ireland and Belgium. The Damned is one of those movies that starts off strong but falls apart later on. Potentially leaving a bad taste in viewer’s mouths. If you can push aside the weaker final third, there is a brilliant horror movie here that is both haunting and very different from most of what released in 2024.

Synopsis: During a harsh winter in the 19th century, a small community is isolated by the elements. When a ship sinks off the coast, the villagers must decide whether to rescue the survivors or leave them to perish to preserve their own dwindling supplies, a choice that brings with it a haunting curse.
Where to Watch: Available to rent or buy on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Google Play.
2. Handling The Undead (2024) – Grief Walking
- Director: Thea Hvistendahl
- Cast: Renate Reinsve, Bjørn Sundquist
- Runtime: 97 minutes
- IMDb: 5.6/10
Why it Ranked: The brilliant John Ajvide Lindqvist, of Let The Right One In fame, penned Handling The Undead, with Thea Hvistendahl taking the directorial helm. This movie takes the zombie horror genre and twists things up a little bit. Approaching the subject from a different angle as three families are confronted by their recently deceased loved ones. It’s excellent stuff and an absolutely fantastic idea. The truth is, however, it is more of a tragic drama than an outright horror. Meaning some people didn’t warm to the movie and some simply overlooked it. For a different type of zombie movie, however, you could do a hell of a lot worse than Handling the Undead.
Synopsis: On a hot summer day in Oslo, the dead mysteriously awaken. Three families are left trying to figure out what this resurrection means and if their loved ones have truly returned or if they are merely empty shells.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu.
1. In a Violent Nature (2024) – Ambient Slasher
- Director: Chris Nash
- Cast: Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic
- Runtime: 94 minutes
- IMDb: 5.7/10
Why it Ranked: In A Violent Nature is a movie that turns the slasher genre on its head. Instead of placing us as part of the group of victims. We, instead, follow along with Johnny as he moves from victim to victim. The kills are absolutely gruesome, the concept is devilishly interesting and the movie is captivating from start to finish. Some viewers underrate In a Violent Nature, however, thanks to the sheer amount of time Johnny spends walking from place to place. If you can push that to one side, though, this is one of the freshest and best slasher movies in years.

Synopsis: An undead killer named Johnny is resurrected when a locket is removed from his grave. He methodically stalks through the wilderness to retrieve it, slaughtering a group of teens who cross his path in a slow, deliberate rampage.
Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder, AMC+, Hulu, and Philo.
