Welcome to Ranking Horror – All We Do is Rank Horror Movies!

Hey. If you have stumbled across this page then you may be wondering how you got here and just what, exactly, this site is all about? Well, it is pretty simple. We rank horror movies. Nothing more and nothing less.

We don’t review horror movies and we don’t explain horror movie endings. I keep that stuff for my feature website Knockout Horror.

We don’t do anything other than offer you, the reader, ranked lists of horror movies. That’s it. Top 10s, Top 20s, 31 Days of Halloween Horror Lists going from worst on the first to best on the big day. It’s really simple.

The Backstory

For years, I poured my energy into building a fully featured horror movie website where I reviewed everything under the sun and wrote lengthy guides explaining complex endings. It was a labour of love that taught me exactly how passionate the horror community really is.

I loved connecting with fellow fans and dissecting the genre we all adore.

Why Just Rankings?

While I loved writing reviews, I realised that my absolute favourite part of the job was the curation. I loved the heated debates over which Friday the 13th movie is the best, or putting together the perfect playlist for a spooky night in.

I wanted to get back to the fun of horror without the pressure of writing 2,000-word explanations on movies that didn’t always deserve the effort.

So, I decided to launch Ranking Horror as a more focused project. This site allows me to strip away the fluff and focus purely on what matters: the movies. It’s bite-sized, it’s punchy, and it lets me cover a massive amount of ground, from obscure 80s slashers to modern A24 masterpieces, without getting bogged down.

A Therapeutic Outlet

To be perfectly honest, this isn’t just a hobby; it’s a necessity. I suffer from bipolar disorder, and writing about horror has always been incredibly therapeutic for me. It’s my way of staying grounded.

By shifting my focus entirely to rankings, I can keep the process fun, engaging, and consistent. It allows me to share my decades of horror knowledge in a way that is enjoyable for me to write, and hopefully, enjoyable for you to read.

My Ultimate Goal

My main goal with this website is to continue talking horror and sharing my knowledge. I have watched thousands upon thousands of horror movies. It is the only genre my partner and I watch, ever. I am practically an expert on the subject with decades of experience. I feel as though my opinion tends to differ enough from the normal horror commentator to offer something truly unique.

I want to give you, the reader, at least one or two outside suggestions in each list. An opportunity to present you with a horror movie that you have never heard of or, perhaps, never considered checking out. I want Ranking Horror to be a site of discovery. I want you to find something new.

How Ranking Horror Works

Unlike a lot of sites that rely on algorithms or aggregated scores, everything here is ranked by me, Richie Ranks. It’s subjective, personal, and honest. I try to update the site with fresh lists 2 to 3 times a week, so there is always something new to check out.

I’ve designed the articles to be as easy to digest as possible, whether you are a skimmer or a deep reader. Each article affords you the chance to spend as little or as long on the site as you wish:

  • The Summary Table: At the very top of every list, you’ll find a table breaking down the top 5 entries. Perfect if you are in a rush and just want the highlights.
  • The Countdown: I rank in ascending order, counting down from 10 (or 20) to the number 1 spot.
  • Why it Ranked: For every movie, I include a specific “Why it Ranked” section. This isn’t just a plot summary; it’s my personal take on why the film deserves its spot, what makes it effective, or why it might be underrated.
  • Quick Picks: If you scroll all the way to the bottom, I include a “Quick Picks” section. This is a rapid-fire summary of the essential movies from the list, categorized by vibe (e.g., “The Slasher Choice,” “The Psychological Scare”).
