10 Artificial Intelligence Themed Horror Movies – Ranked

Welcome to Ranking Horror. Yesterday we checked out 10 English Language Found Footage Horror Movies From Around The World. Today, we are staying closer to home, or perhaps closer to the motherboard, as we take a look at 10 Artificial Intelligence Themed Horror Movies.

In a world that is increasingly dependent on AI to help us with our everyday lives, serious questions have to be asked about just how much we can rely on the technology and what happens when things go wrong. Scientists have been warning, for decades, about the possibility of AI uprisings: a subject that feels all the more pertinent in 2026.

These 10 horror movies all feature an artificial intelligence theme. From simple home assistants like Alexa right up to killer robots, these movies touch on all of the extremes when it comes to our overdependence on all things artificial intelligence. Be it for good or for bad. Keep in mind, I am avoiding the well-known heavy hitters here; some of these movies are obscure. Let’s take a look.

Digital Dread: A summary of the top 5 AI-themed horror entries.

10. 13 Sherwood Avenue (2023) – Spirits in the Smart Home

  • Director: Richard Mansfield
  • Cast: Richard Mansfield
  • Runtime: 65 minutes
  • IMDb: 4.1/10

Why it Ranked: Filmed in a found footage style, 13 Sherwood Avenue is a modern take on a traditional haunting, all amplified through the medium of a smart home assistant that has no interest in doing what the protagonist tells it. Directed by Richard Mansfield, this forms part of a series of similarly titled movies. Unfortunately, it is not a great film, but I appreciate the DIY approach and how it combines the new with the old.

Synopsis: The story focuses on a man who is found dead in his home, days after his artificial intelligence powered smart home assistant devices went rogue and started sharing messages from spirits. It is a grounded look at how tech might bridge the gap between our world and the next.

9. Romi (2023) – The Comatose Connection

  • Director: Robert Cuffley
  • Cast: Alexa Barajas, Pavel Kriz
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • IMDb: 4.7/10

Why it Ranked: The problem is, Romi isn’t a very good horror movie. As far as rogue AI goes, however, the pickings are pretty slim. Alexa Barajas plays one of the most unlikable protagonists in a horror movie, ever. I don’t know how we are expected to relate to this reckless, self-centred person. But the real sin is the lack of scares and the predictable, dull plot. If you are desperate for AI-themed horror, however, it might be worth a look as a Tubi Original.

Romi blends a hit-and-run guilt trip with a rogue home assistant.

Synopsis: A woman hits a man with her car, placing him into a coma. Wanting to get away from the carnage, she hides out in a home equipped with an AI assistant called Romi that soon begins tormenting her, blending a supernatural tale with modern technology.

Where to Watch: Tubi

8. AfrAId (2024) – AIA the Antagonist

  • Director: Chris Weitz
  • Cast: John Cho, Katherine Waterston
  • Runtime: 84 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.1/10

Why it Ranked: Unfortunately, bad horror and rogue AI are frequent bedfellows and AfrAId is no exception. This is a pretty big budget production, directed by Chris Weitz and starring the excellent John Cho. This movie starts out pretty compelling but quickly loses its way, eventually devolving into a horribly messy, extremely poorly written disappointment of a horror. It is a shame as there was some degree of promise here; the execution is just very flawed.

Synopsis: It follows the Pike family who are selected to product-test a brand-new AI home assistant designed to make your life easier. All seems well at first, until the AI goes rogue and starts making the family’s life a living hell by manipulating their digital footprints.

7. Tau (2018) – Solving the Paradox

  • Director: Federico D’Alessandro
  • Cast: Maika Monroe, Ed Skrein
  • Runtime: 97 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.8/10

Why it Ranked: Critics really didn’t enjoy Federico D’Alessandro’s Netflix horror Tau very much. Starring Maika Monroe, of It Follows and Longlegs fame, it is bogged down by a lousy script, a poorly developed story, and relentless predictability. It does look nice, however, and the cast is very good. I mean, how can you refuse an hour or so with Gary Oldman providing the voice? It almost nails the execution, but the second half is a bit weak.

Tau features a high-tech prison overseen by an evolving AI.

Synopsis: A woman is trapped in a house by a sophisticated artificial intelligence. She believes that the best way to escape is to reason with the AI, forming a bizarre bond as she attempts to find a way out of her high-tech prison.

Where to Watch: Netflix

6. Demon Seed (1977) – Prototyping Terror

  • Director: Donald Cammell
  • Cast: Julie Christie, Fritz Weaver
  • Runtime: 94 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: I remember catching Demon Seed on television in the early hours of the morning back when I was quite young. Although not a great movie, it kind of scared the hell out of me. The thought that AI could revolt in such a way made me seriously nervous about future advancements. Now, as an adult, I have an Alexa device in every room and can’t turn many of my lights off or on without it. Never mind. Demon Seed is a pretty awful movie but it is definitely worth a watch for just how silly it is.

Synopsis: Going back to the 70s, this entry follows a woman trapped in her own home by a brilliant artificial intelligence powered home assistant. Unable to escape, the AI begins to construct machines to extend its abilities and comes up with a horrendous plan to ensure its survival.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Apple TV

5. Shattered (2022) – Smart Home Hijack

  • Director: Luis Prieto
  • Cast: Cameron Monaghan, Lilly Krug
  • Runtime: 92 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.1/10

Why it Ranked: This one is probably cheating a bit because it is more of a thriller than a horror, but Shattered features some fairly interesting implementation of AI. I quite like how the smart home assistant was used against the characters. It does a good job of showing how things like smart home assistants can be helpful but, in the wrong hands, can be a very bad thing. Lilly Krug is clearly having a great time here, though there is bags of unrealised potential.

Shattered turns a high-tech sanctuary into a lethal trap.

Synopsis: It follows the story of a tech millionaire who invented a revolutionary smart home. After meeting a beautiful woman who turns out to be a lot more than just a pretty face, he finds his own technology being used to facilitate a brutal robbery.

Where to Watch: Lionsgate+, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

4. Oxygen (2021) – The Milo Dialogue

  • Director: Alexandre Aja
  • Cast: Mélanie Laurent, Mathieu Amalric
  • Runtime: 101 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.5/10

Why it Ranked: We are finally getting to some good movies. French science fiction horror movie Oxygen is one of those one-location horror movies that can be a hell of a lot of fun. I am not one to shout director Alexandre Aja’s praises, as I think a lot of his stuff is quite overrated, but he does a great job here. Mélanie Laurent is fantastic, and the ever-ticking 90-minute timer adds a bunch of suspense. It is a lot more tense than you might initially expect.

Synopsis: A woman wakes up trapped inside a tiny cryogenic chamber with no memory of who she is or how she got there. It is up to her to utilise the AI assistant, Milo, to help her put together the missing pieces of the puzzle before her oxygen runs out.

Where to Watch: Netflix

3. M3gan (2022) – Protecting the Protocol

  • Director: Gerard Johnstone
  • Cast: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw
  • Runtime: 102 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.4/10

Why it Ranked: M3gan was a surprise hit back on release, gaining a tremendous amount of popularity via clips on services like TikTok. The dancing, killer doll created a massive buzz and went beyond viral. It helped that the movie was legitimately great: humorous, entertaining, and just a lot of fun. M3gan is definitely one of the better artificial intelligence themed horror movies in quite a long time. The second movie is coming out this year, so definitely look out for that.

A screenshot from horror movie M3gan (2022)
M3gan became a cultural phenomenon with its blend of camp and tech-horror.

Synopsis: M3gan follows a woman who invents an incredible AI companion doll. Bringing her home to keep her orphaned niece company while she is at work, it isn’t long before the affable companion begins showing a more sinister side that will do absolutely anything to protect its owner.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Sky Go

2. Upgrade (2018) – STEM Unleashed

  • Director: Leigh Whannell
  • Cast: Logan Marshall-Green, Melanie Vallejo
  • Runtime: 100 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.5/10

Why it Ranked: Again, more of a thriller than a horror, but Leigh Whannell writes and directs an action-heavy science fiction piece that takes the idea of AI to a different level. Somehow, Upgrade managed to go way under people’s radars back on release. The action sequences are fantastic, the story is tight with barely any wasted motion, and the science fiction spin on the old-fashioned revenge thriller stuff is utterly refreshing. A brilliant movie that I found to be a huge surprise.

Synopsis: A man who loses both the use of his limbs and his wife to a car accident is given hope after receiving a microchip implant that gives him back his mobility. Things begin to change, however, when the chip, called STEM, starts speaking to him and telling him to seek revenge.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Netflix

1. Companion (2025) – A Humorous Uprising

  • Director: Drew Hancock
  • Cast: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid
  • Runtime: 119 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.2/10

Why it Ranked: Companion is a brilliant movie: funny, witty, clever, and compelling from start to finish. It is a humorous glimpse into the future of AI companions and a refreshing spin on the idea of AI going rogue and fighting back against its master. Sophie Thatcher is absolutely fantastic and completely nails her character, bringing to life something that feels like it could spawn a ton of sequels. Awesome stuff and my favourite movie of 2026 so far.

A screenshot from horror movie Companion (2025)
Companion offers a shocking and satirical take on artificial intimacy.

Synopsis: It follows the story of a woman who heads to a remote mansion with her partner to spend a weekend with his friends. After an unwanted advance, she is forced to defend herself, revealing a hidden secret about the nature of her partner and the world they live in that she never saw coming.
