Welcome to Ranking Horror. It’s Valentine’s Day and that means plenty of people around the world are going to be looking for something to watch with their respective partners.

Let’s be honest, not all of us want to sit down and watch a romcom… Yuk! If you absolutely have to watch something with a romance theme, why not make it something that also includes a ton of blood and guts? That’s where romantic horror movies come in clutch.

Sure, horror and romance may not be the most comfortable bedfellows, but that doesn’t mean the cupboard is completely empty. There are a bunch of scary films that do a great job of balancing love with frights. These ten horror movies are all focused on romance while, also, keeping the horror front and centre. Some are good, others are great, all are fairly recent so should be easy to find.

Grab your partner, grab some snacks, and let’s take a look at 10 Romantic Horror Movies Perfect for a Date Night In.

Love Bites: A summary of the top 5 romantic horror movies.

10. F*** Marry Kill (2024) – Dating App Disaster

  • Director: Laura Murphy
  • Cast: Lucy Hale, Virginia Gardner
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • IMDb: 4.9/10

Why it Ranked: Laura Murphy’s F*** Marry Kill goes heavy on the comedy in this thoroughly modern take on dating horrors. Some will really enjoy Lucy Hale in this one as she is, very much, front and centre. Others will probably find themselves a bit bored by the overly predictable plot and repetitive humour. Still, it’s quite watchable and works as a date night horror.

Synopsis: A newly single woman attempts to find the identity of a dating app serial killer in the worst way possible: by dating them herself. She must navigate a trio of potential suspects to figure out which one wants to marry her and which one wants to kill her.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Hulu. Also available to rent or buy from Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.

9. The Dead Thing (2024) – Erotic Obsession

  • Director: Elric Kane
  • Cast: Blu Hunt, Ben Smith-Petersen
  • Runtime: 93 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.1/10

Why it Ranked: This movie is classed as an “Erotic Horror” and saw a wide release on Valentine’s Day so you know what to expect. Romance but with a deeply dark edge. Overly long, a bit formulaic, slow moving and keen to smell the roses. This movie is the least watchable on the list but some may appreciate the artsy style and alternative approach to romance. Rotten Tomatoes has it as 83% Fresh but actual viewers have it a lot lower in the approval ratings.

An erotic thriller that delves into the toxicity of modern dating.

Synopsis: A woman who spends her life in a constant cycle of work and hook ups meets the man of her dreams, but he may not be exactly what he seems. Her affair with this mysterious stranger leads her down a rabbit hole of obsession and supernatural danger.

Where to Watch: This one is streaming on both Shudder and AMC+.

8. The Gorge (2025) – Sniper Love Story

  • Director: Scott Derrickson
  • Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Miles Teller
  • Runtime: 126 minutes
  • IMDb: N/A

Why it Ranked: How about some Dark Romance, Monster Horror, Action Thriller stuff at number 8? This movie is brand new for 2025 and stars horror regular Anya Taylor-Joy. The romance stuff actually works pretty well here but the movie slips when it places the focus on the altogether too familiar action stuff. Still a good option for something different, though.

Synopsis: Two snipers are tasked with defending either side of a large gorge from an unseen threat. The pair are forced to work together and find a connection across the distance after it becomes clear that there is something truly evil lurking inside the seemingly empty void.

Where to Watch: This is an Apple TV+ exclusive, so it’s streaming only on that platform.

7. After Midnight (2019) – Monster at the Door

  • Director: Jeremy Gardner, Christian Stella
  • Cast: Jeremy Gardner, Brea Grant
  • Runtime: 83 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.1/10

Why it Ranked: After Midnight is written by, directed by, and stars Jeremy Gardner. Despite being rather slow paced. It leans into the reality of relationship complications in a way that feels pretty deep for a horror movie. The romance here is presented in a realistic manner and is pretty well acted, throughout.

A creature feature that doubles as a metaphor for a failing relationship.

Synopsis: Ever since his girlfriend left him, a man finds himself haunted, each and every night, by a vicious monster trying to break into his house. He must determine if the creature is real or a manifestation of his heartbreak.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It’s also available for free with ads on services like Plex and Fawesome.

6. Warm Bodies (2013) – Zombie Romeo

  • Director: Jonathan Levine
  • Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.8/10

Why it Ranked: Warm Bodies mixes apocalyptic horror with comedy and romance to produce something rather unique. In a world obsessed with zombie movies and rarely managing to innovate on the subject in any major way. This film does something quite different and really succeeds. A great date night option for fans of the undead.

Synopsis: In a world overrun by zombies, a surviving girl is attacked by a hoard, only to be saved by an undead boy known simply as “R”. The pair’s unlikely relationship blossoms and, with it, a way out of the disaster begins to become clear.

Where to Watch: This one isn’t on a subscription service right now, but it’s available to rent or buy on all the major VOD platforms, including Apple TV, Prime Video, and Google Play.

5. Nina Forever (2015) – Baggage Claim

  • Director: Ben Blaine, Chris Blaine
  • Cast: Fiona O’Shaughnessy, Abigail Hardingham
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Nina Forever is a very similar idea to the 2014 romantic horror Life After Beth by the late Jeff Baena. You could even throw in Burying the Ex as another similar movie. Feel free to swap either title in as they are all, basically, the same idea. They all approach the subjects of loss and grief through a comedic horror lens and all are pretty decent. I just think Nina Forever is the best of the bunch and Rotten Tomatoes agrees with a 92% fresh rating.

A darkly comic look at grief and the inability to let go of the past.

Synopsis: A young man attempts to move on after the loss of his girlfriend. Only to find himself haunted by her spirit whenever he spends time with his new girlfriend. Nina emerges, bloody and broken, every time they try to be intimate.

Where to Watch: This is a bit of a hidden gem! It’s currently available to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV.

4. Spring (2014) – Lovecraftian Love

  • Director: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead
  • Cast: Lou Taylor Pucci, Nadia Hilker
  • Runtime: 109 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.7/10

Why it Ranked: Again, this is a rather formulaic plot but Spring is very well liked among horror fans. Mixing romance with elements of body horror. There’s some interesting Lovecraftian themes at play here that are sure to please fans of cosmic horror. I’m not the biggest fan of this movie but others love it so it deserves its place in our top five.

Synopsis: An American man struggling with life decides to leave it all behind, jumping on a plane and heading to Italy. He eventually meets a girl and falls in love, but it quickly becomes clear that she may just be hiding a dark, monstrous secret.

Where to Watch: You can watch this one for free with ads on Tubi, Pluto TV, and Xumo Play. It’s also available to rent or buy from Prime Video and Apple TV.

3. Heart Eyes (2025) – Valentine’s Slasher

  • Director: Josh Ruben
  • Cast: Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • IMDb: N/A

Why it Ranked: Heart Eyes is a ton of fun. Effortlessly blending slasher chaos with hilarious comedy and charming romance. This is a movie that benefits from some great character chemistry, some brilliant performances and a hell of a lot of laughs. It shouldn’t work but it does. Heart Eyes is a great option for anyone looking for a completely different kind of rom-com.

A screenshot from romantic comedy slasher movie Heart Eyes (2025)
A perfect blend of rom-com tropes and slasher gore.

Synopsis: It’s Valentine’s day and a couple killing maniac is on the loose. Every year, the “Heart Eyes Killer” goes on a hunt, murdering people in love. This year, co-workers Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding) are forced to team up to protect themselves as they become the killer’s next targets.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Netflix. It’s also available to rent or buy from Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home (Vudu).

2. Spontaneous (2020) – Combustible Chemistry

  • Director: Brian Duffield
  • Cast: Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer
  • Runtime: 101 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.5/10

Why it Ranked: There’s a pretty deep message hidden inside this coming of age, dark comedy, horror. It’s also a genuinely funny movie that approaches matter of the existential in a very different way than most. Tons of fun, legitimately touching and extremely well acted. Spontaneous is a great option for anyone looking for horror romance with a difference.

Synopsis: Mara (Katherine Langford) and Dylan (Charlie Plummer) are sent into a fight for survival after students at their school suddenly begin spontaneously exploding. Knowing it may be them next, the two do whatever they can to make the best of the time that they have.

Where to Watch: Available to rent or buy on all the main platforms, including Google Play, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

1. Let The Right One In (2008) – Blood Bond

  • Director: Tomas Alfredson
  • Cast: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson
  • Runtime: 114 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.9/10

Why it Ranked: This isn’t just the best movie on this list, Let The Right One In is one of the best horror movies in a long time. Vampire movies often feature elements of romance but they are rarely approached in quite such a mature and considered manner as they are here. Playing out as a coming of age horror romance. This is a film that goes to some pretty dark places but is genuinely touching in its presentation of two loners finding each other. Dark, haunting, and utterly compelling. This is a fantastic movie. You could also substitute in the less incredible but still watchable British and American collaboration remake Let Me In.

A screenshot from vampire romantic horror movie Let The Right One In (2008)
A chilling yet tender masterpiece of vampire cinema.

Synopsis: Two kids form an unlikely relationship based on a shared feeling of isolation and loneliness. Oskar is frequently bullied at school. When he meets young girl Eli, he realises that both of them share a feeling of disconnection from the world. The two grow closer but it seems as though Eli maybe hiding a dark secret from Oskar.

Where to Watch: The 2008 original is available to rent or buy from Google Play, Apple TV, and Prime Video. Careful not to pick the TV show accidentally.
