10 Zombie Horror Comedy Movies You Probably Missed – Ranked

Welcome to Ranking Horror. Yesterday we took a look at 10 Unique Zombie Horror Movies that do things Different. We are keeping that zombie horror theme going today as we check out 10 Zombie Horror Comedy Movies You Probably Missed.

It’s funny how well zombie horror lends itself to comedy. Whether it was the release of Shaun of the Dead opening filmmaker’s eyes to how well the two genres blend together, or whether it was simply the very apparent comedic value of the situation itself, zombie movies and comedy make perfect bedfellows. With this in mind, practically every other zombie movie that releases is a comedy.

Most of these are pretty well known: Zombieland, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Warm Bodies, etc. But what about those zomedies that flew under your radar? Today we are looking at 10 Zombie Horror Comedy Movies You Might Have Missed. A few titles here don’t get talked about enough so we are here to rectify that. Let’s take a look.

RankMovie Title (Year)The Chortle-to-Gore Ratio
1One Cut of the Dead (2017)Cinematic Meta-Genius
2The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale (2019)Rejuvenating Family Chaos
3Fido (2006)Satirical Suburban Servitude
4Juan of the Dead (2011)Revolutionary Profit-Seeking
5Cooties (2014)Playground Pestilence
Dead Funny: A summary of the top 5 zombie comedy entries you might have missed.

10. Goal of the Dead (2014) – Extra Time and Extra Brains

  • Director: Thierry Poiraud, Benjamin Rocher
  • Cast: Alban Lenoir, Charlie Bruneau
  • Runtime: 121 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.6/10

Why it Ranked: Coming by way of France, there is one thing I need to point out before I recommend Goal of the Dead to anyone: it is 2 hours and 20 minutes long. That is utterly ridiculous. That runtime makes this movie a bit of a chore to get through, but when it is good it is very good. It’s very under the radar as far as zombie horror comedy movies go. The hilarious plot shouldn’t work as it is just so stupid, but it really does. Goal of the Dead is very different, the setting is utterly unique, and it is quite entertaining, but that runtime is a test of endurance.

Synopsis: A star footballer returns to his home for a match in 2014’s Goal of the Dead. Only to find that he is not being met with adulation but hostility. After a rival player is injected with a steroid that turns him into a raving lunatic, the chaos spreads to the fans who transform into a raging horde.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy)

9. Aaah! Zombies!! (2007) – It’s All a Matter of Perspective

  • Director: Matthew Kohnen
  • Cast: Marcus Van Zelm, Matthew Davis
  • Runtime: 91 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.7/10

Why it Ranked: Director Matthew Kohnen attempts to present the good old fashioned zombie horror comedy from a completely different perspective in 2007’s Aaah! Zombies!! (originally titled Wasting Away). The interesting and unique thing here is that it is presented from the zombies’ point of view. With our characters having no clue what has happened to them, they see everything as they normally would. Every now and then, we get a black and white shot depicting what the humans around them see: a group of zombies chilling as if everything is normal. It’s a fantastic concept and there are plenty of laughs.

Aaah! Zombies!! provides a rare and hilarious glimpse into the zombie psyche.

Synopsis: A group of friends are turned into zombies after eating contaminated ice cream. Unaware of their condition, they continue their daily lives, wondering why everyone else is moving so fast and screaming in their presence.

Where to Watch: Tubi, Amazon Prime Video

8. Little Monsters (2019) – Kindergarten Cop with a Body Count

  • Director: Abe Forsythe
  • Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Gad
  • Runtime: 94 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Little Monsters definitely seems to pass a lot of zombie enthusiasts by, for some reason. Starring the brilliant Lupita Nyong’o and Josh Gad, the comedy here comes as part of the oddball team who are forced to work together. Their situation makes for some hilarious shenanigans that are definitely worth a few laughs. The young age of the school children means the violence never gets too ridiculous and the vibes stay light. Not for everyone but definitely flies under the radar of many horror fans.

Synopsis: A school teacher, a failed musician, and a children’s entertainer must protect a class of young children during a sudden zombie outbreak at a petting zoo.

Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

7. The Battery (2012) – A Low-Budget Road Trip

  • Director: Jeremy Gardner
  • Cast: Jeremy Gardner, Adam Cronheim
  • Runtime: 101 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Jeremy Gardner‘s movies often seem to focus more on the personalities and the dynamics between characters than the actual subject of the horror. Meaning The Battery feels like a road movie with the addition of a few zombies. It is seriously darkly comedic, though, and some of the scenes will have you laughing out loud. The chemistry between the leads is obvious and that helps keep the movie compelling throughout. Definitely a zombie horror comedy that goes under people’s radars.

The Battery focuses on the bickering and boredom of two survivors in the apocalypse.

Synopsis: Two former baseball players with vastly different personalities travel through New England on the search for sanctuary after a zombie apocalypse.

Where to Watch: Tubi, Amazon Prime Video

6. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) – Merit Badges for Survival

  • Director: Christopher Landon
  • Cast: Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller
  • Runtime: 93 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Freaky and Happy Death Day‘s Christopher Landon directs this outrageous teen comedy horror. Bringing together the formula from movies like American Pie and combining it with Shaun of the Dead style zombie silliness, it works pretty well. Fans love it way more than critics. Some of the scenes are completely farcical and Landon tries to shock frequently, but Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is still well worth checking out for its high-energy fun.

Synopsis: Three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak.

Where to Watch: Paramount+, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

5. Cooties (2014) – Lunchtime is Terminated

  • Director: Jonathan Milott, Cary Murnion
  • Cast: Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson
  • Runtime: 88 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.7/10

Why it Ranked: Cooties is probably one of the more well known movies on this list, mainly thanks to its stellar cast. Elijah Wood leads an impressive list of stars and Saw‘s Leigh Whannel shares writing credits. Cooties only took in $581,000 at the box office which is a bit of a shame. This is a zombie horror comedy that does things quite different and succeeds frequently with its sharp wit and over-the-top action.

Cooties features a standout cast of comedy veterans facing off against feral children.

Synopsis: A mysterious virus, transmitted through a tainted chicken nugget, transforms a swarm of elementary school students into a murderous mob of zombies. The misfit teachers must band together to survive.

Where to Watch: Lionsgate+, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

4. Juan of the Dead (2011) – Profiteering in Paradise

  • Director: Alejandro Brugués
  • Cast: Alexis Díaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina
  • Runtime: 92 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.4/10

Why it Ranked: We are off to Cuba for our next movie with Alejandro Brugués’ Juan of the Dead. I haven’t seen too many horror movies from Cuba but that doesn’t mean that they don’t know how to put together a great film. Juan of the Dead‘s subtle, tongue in cheek, political satire and hilarious ZomCom action makes it a genuinely great zombie horror comedy. The characters are likable, the story is both funny and interesting, and I never felt as if it was going too far for the laughs. The fact that it is a Cuban movie means a lot of people missed it but it is well worth seeking out.

Synopsis: When the residents of Havana begin transforming into zombies, the government dismisses it as political unrest. Slacker Juan sees an opportunity for profit, offering his services to kill the undead for cash.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy)

3. Fido (2006) – A Boy and His Beast

  • Director: Andrew Currie
  • Cast: Carrie-Anne Moss, Billy Connolly
  • Runtime: 93 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.7/10

Why it Ranked: Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly is on top form as a pet zombie in Fido. A movie which acts as a satirical take on the American ideal, presenting us with a farcical interpretation of middle class society in America while poking fun at some of its more controversial history. Fido is laugh out loud funny and utterly surprising, feeling incredibly refreshing in a world of zombie horror comedy that is all too formulaic and safe.

A screenshot from zombie horror comedy movie Fido (2006)
Fido uses 1950s aesthetic to deliver a biting social satire about the undead.

Synopsis: In an alternate 1950s where humanity has tamed the zombie population using control collars, a young boy befriends his family’s new zombie servant, Fido.

Where to Watch: Peacock, Amazon Prime Video

2. The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale (2019) – Rejuvenation is Dead

  • Director: Lee Min-jae
  • Cast: Jung Jae-young, Kim Nam-gil
  • Runtime: 112 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.6/10

Why it Ranked: Zombie For Sale has a completely unique plot as far as zombie horror comedy movies go. While the first half takes a while to get going and the movie is a bit on the long side, the second half really picks up and the laughs come thick and fast. The family’s personalities provide the bulk of the comedy and add to the zaniness of the plot. Awesome stuff and another example of how fantastic South Korea are at making original Zombie Horror movies.

Synopsis: The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale (Gimyohan gajok) follows a pharmaceutical company conducting illegal experiments that lead to a young man slowly turning into a zombie. The Park family decide to take him in, realizing his bite has a strange, rejuvenating effect they can sell to the locals.

Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Tubi, Shudder

1. One Cut of the Dead (2017) – Cinematic Magic from Japan

  • Director: Shin’ichirô Ueda
  • Cast: Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama
  • Runtime: 96 minutes
  • IMDb: 7.6/10

Why it Ranked: I would highly suggest you avoid the trailer and just go into this movie completely blind. One Cut of the Dead‘s first half an hour or so is rather vanilla. It doesn’t take long for it to transform into something utterly hilarious and quite ingenious as well. Funny, compelling, clever, and even quite touching in parts. I wouldn’t say this movie is completely forgotten about because fans of zombie movies probably know it quite well. But, as far as zombie comedy horror goes, I think Shin’ichirô Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead is the cream of the crop.

A screenshot from Japanese horror movie One Cut of the Dead (2017)
One Cut of the Dead is a joyous celebration of filmmaking that subverts every expectation.

Synopsis: One Cut of the Dead is a comedy J-Horror that follows a group of budget horror movie makers as they head to an abandoned WW2 facility to make a zombie horror movie. Only to find themselves attacked by actual zombies.

Where to Watch: Shudder, AMC+
