10 Killer Animal Movies from the last Decade – Ranked

Welcome to Ranking Horror where we do nothing but rank horror movies. If you like listicles and are looking for your next great horror movie, stick around. This week we have checked out 10 Enjoyable Cryptid Themed Horror Movies but, today, we are going to be taking a look at something altogether more real. We are ranking 10 Killer Animal Movies From The Last Decade.

When we talk about killer animals, we aren’t talking about mythological creatures or things that have never existed. We are talking about things that are very much of this world. Sharks, Crocodiles, Bears, Wolves. That sort of thing. After all, what could be better than watching a bunch of hapless characters attempt to survive against a group of ravenous animals?

All of these movies are from 2015, onward. I should point out that I won’t be going with any of the silly, over the top, Asylum films so no Sharknado and its ilk. I am also going to skip the dozens of terrible shark movies that release every year because they are, generally, very bad. Without further ado, let’s check out 10 Killer Animal Movies from the Last Decade.

RankMovie Title (Year)The Terror Factor
1The Shallows (2016)Survival Shark Showdown

10. The Bayou (2025) – Meth Gators

  • Director: Taneli Mustonen, Brad Watson
  • Cast: Athena Strates, Flynn Barnard
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.1/10

Why it Ranked: I didn’t say all of these films would be good and 2025’s The Bayou is certainly not. With that being said, it does feature a bunch of alligators off their faces on meth and out for blood so that has to stand for something, right? This isn’t exactly the strongest sub-genre in the world, and while the film struggles with a bit of a sluggish start, it does have a few fun scenes here and there. It attempts to balance a serious tone with a completely absurd premise, which doesn’t always work, but for a late-night watch, it might be worth checking out if you fancy some drugged-up reptilian chaos.

Synopsis: The story follows a group of plane crash survivors making their way through the swamps of Louisiana in search of help. Only to find themselves being pursued by a bunch of hungry gators that have been exposed to narcotic compounds.

Where to Watch: Hulu

9. Into The Grizzly Maze (2015) – Bear Bothering

  • Director: David Hackl
  • Cast: James Marsden, Thomas Jane
  • Runtime: 94 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.3/10

Why it Ranked: The Grizzly Maze is a part of Alaska that plays host to dozens of grizzlies. It became notorious as the location where controversial bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell was killed. That is where Into The Grizzly Maze comes in. Moving onto this movie, you can imagine my surprise when, for the majority of its length, the story plays out as something of a drama, fairly light on the murderous bear stuff. It does get moving later on, however, as the main characters find themselves stalked by a killer bear. A pretty well-known cast can’t save this movie from being a bit of a messy bore, but it still finds a spot here for those who enjoy Alaskan survival tropes.

Into the Grizzly Maze features a star-studded cast versus a massive bear.

Synopsis: Two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home in the Alaskan wilderness. Their journey leads them into the infamous Grizzly Maze, where they are relentlessly stalked by a massive, bloodthirsty grizzly bear.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Tubi (US)

10. The Pack (2015) – Wild Dog Siege

  • Director: Nick Robertson
  • Cast: Jack Campbell, Anna Lise Phillips
  • Runtime: 93 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.1/10

Why it Ranked: A farmer and his family are forced into a fight for survival after their remote farmhouse is invaded by a pack of wild dogs in 2015’s The Pack. A lot of this film simply features wild dogs pacing around the outside of a farmhouse or the family staring out into the black abyss of night. There are a few moments of peril but this is one of those times where the cast of characters have to do some really dumb things to facilitate the scares. Not a fantastic killer animal movie, but it manages to create some decent atmosphere in the dark, and I still kind of enjoyed the isolation aspect.

Synopsis: A rural farmer and his family are besieged in their home by a pack of feral dogs that have developed a taste for human flesh after their natural prey becomes scarce.

Where to Watch: AMC+, IFC Films Unlimited

7. Cocaine Bear (2023) – The High Life

  • Director: Elizabeth Banks
  • Cast: Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr.
  • Runtime: 95 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.9/10

Why it Ranked: I am a big fan of Elizabeth Banks when she is playing random side characters, but when she is directing action horror movies about coked-up killer bears, I am not so sure. You all know the story of this one, right? This is, supposedly, based on a true story, though the reality of what happened is far more boring. In real life, the bear took a snoot full of marching powder, took a few steps and promptly died. In Cocaine Bear, it goes nuts and racks up an impressive kill count. If you don’t take this movie too seriously, it can be a bit of a laugh. Just don’t expect too much from the human plotlines.

Cocaine Bear leans heavily into the absurdity of its premise.

Synopsis: An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound black bear has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a drug-fueled rampage.

Where to Watch: Peacock, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

6. The Meg (2018) – Prehistoric Problems

  • Director: Jon Turteltaub
  • Cast: Jason Statham, Li Bingbing
  • Runtime: 113 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.6/10

Why it Ranked: We might be bending the rules a little here as the Carcharodon Megalodon hunting the team of deep-sea rescuers in The Meg isn’t exactly still swimming the oceans today. Still, it did exist at one point and it’s hard to deny just how much fun The Meg can be. Again, like Cocaine Bear, you have to switch your brain off to enjoy this one. It is an action-packed, silly, funny, and enjoyable adventure but the entire thing is done with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Jason Statham fighting a giant prehistoric shark is exactly what you think it is: brilliant popcorn cinema.

Synopsis: After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible from the prehistoric predator.

Where to Watch: Max, Amazon (Rent/Buy)

5. Sting (2024) – Arachnid Attic

  • Director: Kiah Roache-Turner
  • Cast: Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne
  • Runtime: 91 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.7/10

Why it Ranked: Damn! I might be cheating again with this one. Do spiders that come from space count? I don’t know but arachnophobes are sure to have a difficult time with 2024’s Sting. This is a bit of a confused film, merging overly saccharin familial drama with some seriously creepy moments, adult language, and a lot of gore. Sting feels a little bit messy and unsure of who it is trying to appeal to. Still, as far as scary looking arachnids go, it delivers in spades. Definitely one for people who hate spiders to avoid.

A screenshot from killer animal horror movie Sting (2024)
Sting features some of the most unnerving spider effects in years.

Synopsis: After raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret, 12-year-old Charlotte must face the facts about her pet when the once-charming creature rapidly transforms into a giant, flesh-eating monster.

Where to Watch: Hulu

4. 47 Meters Down (2017) – Cage Craze

  • Director: Johannes Roberts
  • Cast: Mandy Moore, Claire Holt
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.6/10

Why it Ranked: One of the better shark themed horror movies in quite a while, 47 Meters Down offers up exactly what you might expect. Johannes Roberts directs this movie that features unrealistic scenarios, overly aggressive sharks, and a whole bunch of silliness. Sure, a lot of what happens makes no sense but it is easy to buy into the character’s fears and there are enough moments of tension to keep 47 Meters Down enjoyable throughout. The claustrophobia of being trapped at the bottom of the ocean adds a layer of dread that most shark films miss.

Synopsis: Two sisters holidaying in Mexico decide to observe sharks from the safety of a cage. When the cable snaps, they find themselves trapped on the ocean floor with dwindling oxygen and sharks circling nearby.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Tubi (US)

3. Beast (2022) – Safari Stalking

  • Director: Baltasar Kormákur
  • Cast: Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley
  • Runtime: 93 minutes
  • IMDb: 5.6/10

Why it Ranked: Beast’s plot is extremely simple. A father and his two daughters are hunted by a rogue lion on the African Savanna. There is a sort of old fashioned charm to Beast that takes you back to a time when movies like this were fairly common place. Idris Elba stars in this cat and mouse thriller that works really well for the most part. Sure, it is full of stupid character actions and unbelievable scenarios, but killer animal horror is not the place to look for realism. Just turn your brain off and try to enjoy the ride through the South African landscape.

Idris Elba goes toe-to-toe with a rogue lion in Beast.

Synopsis: A widowed father and his two teenage daughters travel to a game reserve in South Africa. However, their journey of healing turns into a terrifying fight for survival when a bloodthirsty, rogue lion begins stalking them.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Hulu

2. Crawl (2019) – Florida Floods

  • Director: Alexandre Aja
  • Cast: Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper
  • Runtime: 87 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.1/10

Why it Ranked: Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja returns to the killer animal horror fold with 2019’s Crawl. Kaya Scodelario stars in this movie which feels like a warm hug for those of us who grew up loving survival horror movies like this. The alligators are hungry, the people are dumb, and the cat and mouse shenanigans are seriously fun. It is not reinventing the wheel in any way, shape, or form. It’s just good old fashioned killer animal fun. Plenty of tension and some decent chase scenes make Crawl one of the better movies of its kind in quite a while.

Synopsis: While a massive hurricane hits Florida, Haley ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father. Finding him injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by encroaching floodwaters and a pair of giant alligators.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Paramount+

1. The Shallows (2016) – Shoreline Survival

  • Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
  • Cast: Blake Lively
  • Runtime: 86 minutes
  • IMDb: 6.3/10

Why it Ranked: Blake Lively finds herself in a fight for survival after being attacked by a great white shark just a couple of hundred yards from shore in 2016’s The Shallows. The short distance actually works to increase the thrill factor of this movie. It’s the performance of Lively that really props this movie up, turning The Shallows from a simple b-movie into a genuinely compelling tale of human survival. Lively’s realistic reactions and depth of expression bring so much to the role. Leaving The Shallows to stand out as, perhaps, the best killer animal movie of the last decade.

A screenshot from killer animal horror movie The Shallows (2016)
Blake Lively delivers a powerhouse performance in the tense shark thriller The Shallows.

Synopsis: Still reeling from the loss of her mother, medical student Nancy Adams travels to a secluded beach for some much-needed solace. Despite the danger of surfing alone, she decides to hit the waves, only to find herself being hunted by a great white shark.

Where to Watch: Amazon (Rent/Buy), Starz

There we have it, 10 killer animal movies from the last decade that prove nature is just as terrifying as any supernatural ghost or spirit.
